Utangulizi — Saa ImefikaIntroduction — The Hour Has Come

Everything in this Gospel has been moving toward this hour. The signs, the seven "I AM" sayings, the gathering witnesses, the deepening conflict — all of it has led here, to a garden in the dark, a hill called Golgotha, and an empty tomb at dawn. In these last chapters the King goes to His throne, finishes the work He came to do, and rises in triumph over death. And when it is all told, John lays down his pen and tells us plainly why he wrote every word: "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:31). This final unit follows the King from betrayal to victory, and then asks each of us for a verdict.

I. Bustani na UsalitiI. The Garden and the Betrayal

Mimi nisikinywe?" (Yohana 18:11). Mwana-Kondoo alitembea kwa hiari yake kuelekea madhabahuni. It began in a garden. After the supper Jesus went with His disciples to Gethsemane, where in deep agony He prayed and yielded Himself to the Father's will. Then Judas came, one of His own, guiding a detachment of soldiers with torches and weapons to arrest the Light of the world in the dark. Betrayal by a trusted friend is among the deepest of human wounds — the very name of Benedict Arnold has become a synonym for it — and Jesus drank that cup too. Yet notice that He was no helpless victim. When the soldiers said they sought Jesus of Nazareth, He answered, "I am He," and at that word the whole company drew back and fell to the ground. He went to the cross not because He was overpowered but because He chose to go. When Peter drew a sword to fight, Jesus told him to put it away: "Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?" (John 18:11). The Lamb walked willingly to the altar.

II. Kutawazwa kwa Mfalme na Kiti Chake cha EnziII. The King's Coronation and His Throne

What followed looked like the humiliation of a criminal, but John means us to see a coronation. The soldiers, mocking the idea that this beaten man could be a king, gave Him the trappings of royalty turned cruel: a crown — but woven of thorns; a robe — but a faded purple thrown over a flogged back; a scepter — but a common reed. Then Pilate led Him out and said, "Behold the Man!" (John 19:5). The crowd screamed for crucifixion, and when Pilate asked, "Shall I crucify your King?" the chief priests gave their tragic answer: "We have no king but Caesar" (19:15). So the King was led to Golgotha, and there the deepest irony of all became the deepest truth: the cross was His throne. Over it Pilate fastened a sign in three languages — "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews" — and when they protested, he answered, "What I have written, I have written" (19:22). The mockery told the truth without knowing it.

"Aliwaokoa wengine; na ajiokoe mwenyewe," walidhihaki. Lakini ni hasa kwa kutojiokoa mwenyewe ndipo anatuokoa sisi."He saved others; let Him save Himself," they jeered. But it is precisely in not saving Himself that He saves us.
Mchoraji msalabani. The painter at the cross. In Rembrandt's painting The Raising of the Cross, the eye is drawn first to Christ, then to the men caught in the act of hoisting the Son of God into place. But in the middle of them, straining at the cross in a painter's blue cap, stands one more figure — and art critics have long said it is Rembrandt himself, who understood that his own sins helped nail Jesus to that tree. We belong in that picture too. And it is for us, the very ones who raised that cross, that the King reigned from it.

III. "Imekwisha"III. "It Is Finished"

Kisha likaja neno linaloipa sehemu hii jina lake. Alipokwisha kupokea kinywaji, Yesu alipaza sauti, "Imekwisha!" na akiinama kichwa, akaitoa roho yake (Yohana 19:30). Hakusema, "Mimi nimekwisha." Then came the word that gives this unit its name. Having received a drink, Jesus cried out, "It is finished!" and bowing His head, gave up His spirit (John 19:30). He did not say, "I am finished." It was not the gasp of a defeated man but the shout of a victor. In the Greek of John's Gospel it is a single word — tetelestai — the very word a merchant would stamp across a bill that had been settled: Paid in Full. The whole work of redemption that He came to do was now complete; there was nothing to add, nothing left owing. And mark how He died: He gave up His spirit. No one took His life from Him; as the Good Shepherd had said, He laid it down of Himself. The King finished His work, and from His finished work flows every forgiveness we will ever know.

A praying mother's God. R. A. Torrey strayed far from the faith of his childhood at university, fell into skepticism and despair, and one night came to the point of ending his life. But he remembered his mother's parting words: "Son, when you come to the darkest hour of all, if you will honestly call on your mother's God, you will get help." In desperation he cried out, "O God of my mother, if there be such a Being, I need help — if You will give it to me, I will follow You." Light and peace flooded his heart, and he rose to become one of the great evangelists of his age. The finished work of the cross was as sufficient for Torrey in his darkest hour as it is for the worst sinner who calls on Christ today.

IV. Kaburi Tupu na MashahidiIV. The Empty Tomb and the Witnesses

But the story did not end at a grave. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found the stone rolled away. Weeping, supposing the body stolen, she did not know the risen Lord even when He stood before her — until He spoke her name, "Mary," and she knew Him. The first witness of the resurrection was a woman whose life He had rescued, sent to carry the news to the apostles themselves. Peter and John ran to the empty tomb and saw the grave-clothes lying there. And then there was Thomas, who would not believe the others' word: "Unless I see... I will not believe." Eight days later the risen Christ stood among them and offered Thomas His wounded hands, and Thomas fell before Him with the great confession of the whole Gospel: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). To him Jesus said, "Because you have seen Me you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed" (20:29) — a blessing spoken across the centuries to us.

Atakuwa hai tena?" hatimaye limejibiwa kwa "ndiyo" kuu. This is no tale of wishful thinking. Jesus appeared again and again over forty days, once to more than five hundred at a time. The timid disciples who had scattered became bold witnesses who would die rather than deny what they had seen — and men do not die for what they know to be a lie. The ancient question of Job, "If a man dies, shall he live again?" is answered at last with a resounding yes.

V. Kurejeshwa ili Kutumika — na HukumuV. Restored to Serve — and the Verdict

Tukio moja lilibaki, kando ya Bahari ya Galilaya. Petro, aliyekuwa amemkana Bwana wake mara tatu kando ya moto, alikutana naye tena kando ya moto mwingine. One scene remained, by the Sea of Galilee. Peter, who had denied his Lord three times around a fire, met Him again beside another fire. Three times Jesus asked him, "Do you love Me?" and three times, grieved and humbled, Peter answered yes — and three times Jesus gave him back his calling: "Feed My sheep" (John 21:17). The public failure was met with a public restoration. For in Christ, failure is not fatal, life is not futile, and death is not final. The history of the church is full of such grace: a Moravian missionary named Georg Schmidt labored among the Khoikhoi of South Africa, baptized only five converts, was forced to leave the country and never allowed back, and is said to have died on his knees in prayer — counted a failure; yet when missionaries returned nearly fifty years later, they found an old woman he had baptized still treasuring the New Testament he had left her, and from that remnant grew the oldest mission station in South Africa. The risen Lord still takes those who have failed Him and makes them pillars of His church.

Imekwisha. Sasa njoo, uishi. And so the Gospel reaches its verdict. John has called witness after witness — John the Baptist, the signs, the Father, the Scriptures, the Spirit, the empty tomb — and now he rests his case and tells us why: "these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:31). The whole book has been a courtroom, and the evidence points to one conclusion. The verdict is not left to a jury far away; it is placed in your hands. Having seen the King crowned, crucified, finished, and risen — do you believe? For to all who receive Him and believe on His name, He gives the right to become children of God, and life everlasting in His name. The cross was His throne, the empty tomb His vindication, and the open Gospel His summons to the world. It is finished. Now come, and live.
