Utangulizi — Muujiza Pekee Ulio Katika Injili Zote NneIntroduction — The Only Miracle in All Four Gospels
Of all the wonders our Lord performed, only one was thought so important that all four Gospel writers recorded it: the feeding of the five thousand. It happened on the grassy hills above the Sea of Galilee, and it carries us straight back to Moses in the wilderness. There a vast crowd of former slaves had no food, and no human being had a solution — a God-sized problem. God answered it with manna, a bread He rained from heaven that they had never seen before. In John 6 the scene returns: another great crowd, another empty wilderness, another God-sized problem — and the same God to solve it. Only this time the One who provides the bread will say, before the chapter is done, that He Himself is the Bread.
I. Tatizo la Ukubwa wa MunguI. A God-Sized Problem
Jesus had taught the crowd all day, and evening was coming on. The disciples grew anxious: the people were hungry and there was nothing to feed them. Philip did the math and gave up — two hundred denarii, eight months' wages, would not buy enough for each to have a bite. Then Andrew found a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. Barley was the bread of the very poor, and the little fish were no more than salted sardines; it was a child's sack lunch, likely packed by his mother. "But what are they among so many?" Notice that John tells us Jesus already knew what He would do. He let the problem grow large in the disciples' eyes precisely so they would see that the answer was not in their arithmetic but in their Lord.
II. Huruma ya KiunguII. Divine Compassion
Kwa nini alifanya hivyo? Mathayo anatuambia waziwazi: "akawahurumia, akawaponya wagonjwa wao." Matthew tells us plainly: "He was moved with compassion for them, and He healed their sick." At least eight times the Gospels say that Jesus felt compassion; it was no small thing in Him, but a flood. People sometimes imagine the God of the Old Testament as harsh and the Jesus of the New as kind, as though they were two different Gods. But there is no difference between the Father and the Son. The Old Testament speaks again and again of God's compassion, and "God was in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself" (2 Corinthians 5:19). The same heart that fed Israel manna fed the crowd by Galilee. And because we are the body of Christ, His compassion is now to flow through us; "inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these," He said, "you did it to Me" (Matthew 25:40).
III. Kuongezeka kwa KiunguIII. Divine Multiplication
Jesus took the little lunch, gave thanks, and broke it — and as He broke it, it multiplied in His hands until thousands were fed. When all were full, He said, "Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost," and they filled twelve baskets with the leftovers of five barley loaves (John 6:12–13). There is more left over than there had been to begin with. That is grace upon grace; we never come to the end of it. And notice how He worked: He took a boy's small gift and made it feed a multitude. He is still in that business. Remember the widow of Zarephath, down to her last handful of flour and drop of oil, who fed the prophet first and never ran empty again. God delights to take the little we surrender and multiply it past all counting.
IV. Muumba Hamdai Mtu YeyoteIV. The Creator Is No Man's Debtor
The miracle set the crowd ablaze. Here, they thought, is the king we want — a man who can fill every stomach and end every shortage; let us take Him by force and make Him king and march on Jerusalem. But Jesus withdrew alone to the mountain. He would not be crowned on man's terms or for man's appetites. His kingdom would come from the Father's hand, not the mob's, and in due time He will reign indeed. The danger in that crowd is the danger in every age: to want Jesus for the bread He gives rather than for Himself. The Creator is no man's debtor; He gives because He is good, not because we have cornered Him.
V. Alitembea Juu ya BahariV. He Walked Upon the Sea
That evening the disciples set out across the lake without Him, and a storm rose against them; they strained at the oars in the dark, going nowhere. Then they saw Him — walking on the water, the very sea He had made bending like a floor beneath His feet. They were terrified, until His voice came across the waves: "It is I; do not be afraid" (John 6:20). In the Greek it is simply "I AM" — the name of God spoken over a storm. The same Lord who multiplied bread on the shore walks the deep as its Master. As a man He had been weary enough to need rest; as God He treads the waves. And the moment they received Him into the boat, John says, immediately they were at the land where they were going.
VI. Mimi Ndimi Mkate wa UzimaVI. I Am the Bread of Life
The next day the crowd hunted Him down — not for the signs, He told them, but because they had eaten the loaves and were full. "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life." They threw Moses and the manna in His face: our fathers ate bread from heaven; what will You do? Jesus answered that the manna was only a shadow, and that the true Bread had now come down from heaven and was standing before them. Then He said it: "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst" (John 6:35). We live in an age of spiritual hunger. The real hunger is for God, but men try to stuff the emptiness with food, with sex, with money, with recognition — and every one of them leaves the soul as hollow as before. Augustine spent his early years chasing exactly those things and came up starving, until he wrote the words the whole human race could sign: "You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee."
VII. Neno Gumu — na Twende kwa Nani Tena?VII. A Hard Saying — and Where Else Shall We Go?
Jesus pressed further than the crowd could bear: "The bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world" (John 6:51). He was pointing past the loaves to the cross, and to the soul that feeds on Him by faith. It was too much for many; "from that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more." So He turned to the Twelve: "Do you also want to go away?" And Peter answered with the only honest answer there is: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). When the crowd thins and the easy bread is gone, that is the question that holds a soul: where else is there to go? There is no other Bread. He alone is the Bread of Life, and as the lad gave his loaves and the disciples passed them on, so the bread we have received is to be carried, through our surrendered lives, to a perishing and hungry world.
