Utangulizi — Mahakama ImeketiIntroduction — The Court Is in Session
Hapo ndipo hasa Yohana anakusudia kutuacha.John tells us exactly why he wrote his Gospel: "these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:31). The whole book is built like a trial. A great claim is on the table — that this Man is God in the flesh — and John summons witness after witness to the stand so that the reader, like a juror, may weigh the evidence and render a verdict. In a Jewish court no charge could stand on one voice alone; "by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established" (Deuteronomy 19:15). That law is wiser than we sometimes think. Modern studies have found that human eyewitness memory is mistaken far more often than we would ever expect, which is precisely why a single witness was never enough. But Jesus does not offer the bare minimum of two. He calls a whole chorus of witnesses, and they do not contradict one another; they agree. A juror who hears a single mistaken witness may rightly hesitate. But a juror who hears the Baptist, the works, the Father, the Scriptures, Moses, the Spirit, and a long line of changed lives all saying the same thing is left without excuse. That is exactly where John means to leave us.
I. Shtaka: Kujifanya Sawa na MunguI. The Charge: Equal with God
Hilo ndilo shtaka. Yesu hakulikana kamwe; alilijibu — si kwa kulilainisha dai hilo, bali kwa kuwaita mashahidi wake. The trial comes to a head at the pool of Bethesda. There a man had been an invalid for thirty-eight years, and Jesus healed him with a word — on the Sabbath. Instead of rejoicing, the leaders were enraged, and John tells us why their anger turned murderous: "the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God" (John 5:18). There is the charge. Jesus never denied it; He answered it — not by softening the claim, but by calling His witnesses.
II. Mashahidi Ambao Yesu AliwatajaII. The Witnesses Jesus Named
Standing before His accusers in John 5, Jesus called the roll of those who testify to who He is.
(1:29). Maisha yote ya Mbatizaji yalikuwa kidole kinachomwelekea Kristo. The witness of John the Baptist. He was, Jesus said, "a burning and shining lamp" (5:35), and that lamp had pointed away from itself: "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (1:29). The Baptist's whole life was a finger pointing to Christ.
Ushuhuda wa kazi zake. "Mimi nina ushuhuda ulio mkuu kuliko ule wa Yohana," Yesu alisema, "kwa maana kazi zile alizonipa Baba ili nizimalize, kazi hizo ninazozifanya, zanishuhudia ya kuwa Baba amenituma" (5:36). Ishara hazikuwa maajabu tu; zilikuwa ushuhuda, ushahidi ulioapishwa wa utambulisho wake. The witness of His works. "I have a greater witness than John's," Jesus said, "for the works which the Father has given Me to finish — the very works that I do — bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me" (5:36). The signs were not mere wonders; they were testimony, sworn evidence of His identity.
Ushuhuda wa Baba. "Na Baba aliyenipeleka, yeye amenishuhudia" (5:37). Huyu ndiye shahidi wa pili ambaye Torati ilidai, na ndiye aliye juu kuliko wote. Kama Yesu alivyosema mahali pengine, "Mimi ndimi ninayejishuhudia mwenyewe, naye Baba aliyenipeleka ananishuhudia" (8:18).The witness of the Father. "The Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me" (5:37). This is the second witness the Law demanded, and it is the highest of all. As Jesus said elsewhere, "I am One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me" (8:18).
The witness of the Scriptures. "You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me" (5:39). They had the witness in their hands and would not hear it.
The witness of Moses. "Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you — Moses... for he wrote about Me" (5:45–46). The very lawgiver they trusted was a witness against their unbelief.
III. Kwa Nini Ushuhuda Wake Mwenyewe UnasimamaIII. Why His Own Testimony Stands
Mafarisayo walipopinga, "Wewe unajishuhudia mwenyewe; ushuhuda wako si kweli," Yesu hakutetereka. When the Pharisees objected, "You bear witness of Yourself; Your witness is not true," Jesus did not flinch. "Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know" (8:14). A liar can be tripped up because he is inventing; the Son speaks from firsthand knowledge of heaven, of the Father, of His own eternal origin. And He added that He did not stand alone: He and the Father together were the two witnesses the Law required. The verdict, then, does not rest on one disputed voice but on a Son who cannot be mistaken about Himself and a Father who seconds every word.
IV. Mashahidi Ambao Yohana Anawapitisha Mbele YetuIV. The Witnesses John Parades Before Us
Beyond the witnesses Jesus named in court, John fills his Gospel with living witnesses — ordinary people whose changed lives testify louder than argument.
(20:18).John the Baptist stands first, the herald who cried, "Behold the Lamb of God," and sent his own followers after Jesus. The Samaritan woman ran into her town crying, "Come, see a Man who told me all that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" — and many believed because of her word. The nobleman whose dying son Jesus healed at a distance did not keep the mercy to himself: "he himself believed, and his whole household" (4:53). The man born blind, brought before the Pharisees and pressed to deny his Healer, gave one of the bravest testimonies in all Scripture: "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see" (9:25). And Mary Magdalene, weeping at an empty tomb, became the first witness of the resurrection, running to the disciples with the cry that has echoed ever since: "I have seen the Lord!" (20:18).
Angalia jinsi baraza hili la mahakama lisivyotarajiwa: mhubiri wa jangwani, mgeni mwenye maisha ya uasherati, baba mwenye huzuni, kipofu aliyekuwa mwombaji, mwanamke ambaye pepo saba walikuwa wametoka ndani yake. Hakuna hata mmoja wao aliyekuwa mwanatheolojia aliyesomea. Notice how unlikely a jury these make: a desert preacher, an immoral foreigner, a grieving father, a begging blind man, a woman out of whom seven demons had gone. Not one of them was a trained theologian. Yet each had met Jesus, and each could say what they had seen and heard.
And mark the cost some of them paid. The man born blind did not give his testimony in safety; he gave it under interrogation, knowing the price. His own parents, afraid of the authorities, dodged the question and threw it back on him: "He is of age; ask him." The Pharisees questioned him twice, reviled him, and at last "cast him out" — put him out of the synagogue, cut off from the only religious community he had ever known. He bore witness anyway. A true witness does not wait until it is safe; he tells what he has seen because it is true and leaves the cost to God. So it has been ever since. The witnesses who built the church were not, for the most part, the powerful or the protected, but ordinary believers who had seen enough of Christ that no threat could make them unsay it. When the Spirit has opened a man's eyes, his quiet "now I see" will outlast every clever objection raised against it.
V. Msiba na HukumuV. The Tragedy and the Verdict
With witnesses this many and this sure, you would think the case was closed. But Jesus laid bare the secret of unbelief in one piercing sentence: "You are not willing to come to Me that you may have life" (John 5:40). The problem was never a shortage of evidence; it was an unwillingness of the will. They would not come. And here John hands the case to us. He has set the witnesses before our eyes — the Baptist, the works, the Father, the Scriptures, Moses, the Spirit, and the long line of changed lives — and now he asks for our verdict. Will we, like the leaders, refuse to come? Or will we render the only honest verdict the evidence allows: that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and in believing find life in His name?
"Mtakuwa mashahidi wangu," Yesu alisema (Matendo 1:8). The earliest believers, who had weighed the witnesses and come down on the side of faith, did not at first call themselves Christians. They called themselves followers of "the Way," because they had single-mindedly given their lives to the One the witnesses pointed to. And every believer since has been called to take the stand in turn. "You shall be witnesses to Me," Jesus said (Acts 1:8). The Samaritan woman could not preach a sermon, but she could say, "Come and see." The blind man could not win a debate, but he could say, "Once I was blind, now I see." Neither can the world silence such testimony, for it rests not on argument but on Christ Himself, seen and known. Take your place, then, among the witnesses.
