— Mathayo 8:27 (SUV)"Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him!" — Matthew 8:27 (NKJV)

Kutoka Maneno Hadi MatendoFrom Words to Works

The Sermon on the Mount ended with the crowds astonished, "for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes" (Matthew 7:29). In Units 3 through 5 we heard the King speak with that authority. Now Matthew shows us the same authority in action. Chapters 8 and 9 gather a cluster of miracles — roughly nine of them in three groups, with teaching about discipleship woven between — and the whole collection presses one question on us, the question the terrified disciples cry out in the boat: "Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" The King who spoke with authority now heals, calms, casts out, forgives, and raises the dead. His words and His works say the same thing: the kingdom of heaven has drawn near in Him.

Mamlaka Juu ya Magonjwa: Mwenye Ukoma na AkidaAuthority Over Disease: the Leper and the Centurion

First a leper comes and kneels, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." Jesus does the unthinkable — He reaches out and touches the untouchable man — and says, "I am willing; be cleansed" (Matthew 8:2-3). Under the law no one touched a leper; but the King's touch does not catch defilement, it gives cleansing. Then a Roman centurion comes pleading for his servant, and when Jesus offers to come, the soldier answers, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed" (Matthew 8:8). He understands authority — a word from this King is enough. Jesus marvels: "I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!" (Matthew 8:10). A Gentile soldier becomes a picture of the faith the King is looking for, and an early sign that many will come from east and west into the kingdom.

Aliutwaa Udhaifu WetuHe Took Our Infirmities

That evening Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law and many others who are brought to Him, and Matthew sees in it the fulfillment of the prophet: "He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses" (Matthew 8:17, quoting Isaiah 53:4). The healings are more than acts of kindness; they are signs pointing to the cross, where the Servant would bear away the deepest sickness of all. Between the miracles, Jesus also presses the cost of following Him: "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head" (Matthew 8:20). The authority that heals also calls, and it calls for everything.

Mamlaka Juu ya Viumbe vya Asili: Dhoruba InatulizwaAuthority Over Nature: the Storm Stilled

They get into a boat, and a great storm rises until the waves cover it — while Jesus sleeps. The disciples wake Him in terror: "Lord, save us! We are perishing!" He answers, "Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?" Then He stands and rebukes the winds and the sea, and there is a great calm (Matthew 8:24-26). The men are left more amazed than frightened, asking one another, "Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" In the Old Testament it is the LORD alone who rules the raging sea. The disciples are staring at the answer to their own question, though they cannot yet take it in: the One asleep in their boat is the Lord of wind and wave.

Mamlaka Juu ya PepoAuthority Over Demons

Ng'ambo ya pili wanaume wawili wenye pepo, wakali mno, wanakutana naye, hata mtu asiweze kupita njia ile. Pepo wenyewe wanajua yeye ni nani, wakilia, "Tuna nini nawe, Yesu, Mwana wa Mungu? Je! Umekuja huku kutuadibu kabla ya muhula?" (Mathayo 8:29). On the far shore two violent demon-possessed men meet Him, so fierce that no one could pass that way. The demons themselves know who He is, crying out, "What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" (Matthew 8:29). At His word they are cast out into a herd of swine, which rushes down into the sea. Here is authority even over the powers of darkness. But notice the town's response: when the people hear of it, they come out and beg Jesus to leave their region (Matthew 8:34). They would rather keep their pigs than keep the King. It is a sober warning — His authority can be felt and still be unwelcome.

Mamlaka ya Kusamehe DhambiAuthority to Forgive Sins

Back in His own city they bring Him a paralyzed man on a bed, and Jesus says something no one expected: "Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you" (Matthew 9:2). The scribes are scandalized — who can forgive sins but God alone? They are right that only God can, and that is exactly the point. Jesus asks which is easier, to say "your sins are forgiven" or "arise and walk," and then heals the man "that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins" (Matthew 9:6). The visible healing is proof of the invisible authority. The King's deepest miracle is not over fever or storm but over guilt; He came chiefly to deal with sin, and the healed legs are the evidence.

Rafiki wa Wenye Dhambi na Divai MpyaThe Friend of Sinners and the New Wine

Then Jesus sees a tax collector named Matthew sitting at the tax booth — a man his neighbors despised — and says simply, "Follow Me," and Matthew rises and follows. When Jesus eats with tax collectors and sinners in Matthew's house, the Pharisees object, and He answers, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick... I desire mercy and not sacrifice. For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance" (Matthew 9:12-13). When asked why His disciples do not fast like the Pharisees, He gives the picture of the new wine: "Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins... but they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved" (Matthew 9:17). The point is the danger of inflexibility. New wine ferments and swells and needs a skin that can stretch; an old, dried, brittle skin will only burst. The religion of the day had grown hard — hard in its rules, hard in its structures, hard in its thinking — and it could not contain the new and living thing Jesus was bringing. The danger is still ours. A church can harden into inflexible rules, measuring faith by what a person does not do; into an inflexible structure that says "we never did it that way before"; into inflexible thinking that has stopped looking for new ways to reach people. But our standard of conduct was never a set of rules; it is always a Person. The Pharisees lifted up rules and broke people; Jesus lifted up people and broke rules. The new wine of the gospel is too alive to be poured into the old, stiff forms of mere religion.

Mamlaka Juu ya MautiAuthority Over Death

Kisha anafika nyumbani mwa yule mkuu, anamshika mkono yule msichana aliyekufa, naye anaondoka (Mathayo 9:25). Mamlaka ya Mfalme yanafika hata kaburini. Yule mwanamke aliyetetemeka na yule baba aliyeomboleza wote wawili wanakutana na jambo lilelile — imani, hata ikiwa ndogo kiasi gani, ambayo inamjia Yesu tu na haifukuzwi.A ruler comes and kneels: his daughter has just died, but if Jesus will come and lay His hand on her, she will live. On the way a woman who has suffered a flow of blood for twelve years touches the hem of His garment, thinking, "If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well." Jesus turns and says, "Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well" (Matthew 9:22). Then He comes to the ruler's house, takes the dead girl by the hand, and she arises (Matthew 9:25). The King's authority reaches even into the grave. The trembling woman and the grieving father are both met by the same thing — a faith, however small, that simply comes to Jesus and is not turned away.

Huruma kwa Ajili ya MavunoCompassion for the Harvest

The unit ends with two more healings — two blind men who cry, "Son of David, have mercy on us!" and a mute man freed from a demon — and with the opposition hardening, as the Pharisees mutter that He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons (Matthew 9:34). That charge will grow into the conflict of the next unit. But Matthew closes not on the opposition but on the King's heart: "When He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, 'The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest'" (Matthew 9:36-38). The authority we have watched on display is not cold power; it is the power of a Shepherd-King moved to the heart by the lostness of the crowds.

Huyu Ni Nani?Who Can This Be?

By the end of these two chapters the question of the storm has its answer. Who can this be? He is the King with authority over disease, over nature, over demons, over sin, and over death itself — the One who fulfills Isaiah by bearing our infirmities, the friend of sinners whose new wine bursts the old forms, and the Shepherd moved with compassion for a harvest with no one to gather it. Through it all, one response is commended again and again: faith — the leper's, the centurion's, the bleeding woman's, the faith that simply comes to Him. And one response stands as a warning: the town that asked Him to leave. The same prayer He taught His disciples He now asks of us, for the harvest is still plentiful and the laborers still few.

— Mathayo 9:37-38 (SUV)"The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." — Matthew 9:37-38 (NKJV)
