Salvation is the free gift of God, received by faith and never earned. Yet the believer who has been saved still carries the flesh, which wars against the Spirit (Galatians 5:17) — not a second person living inside him, but the continuing pull of sin's power in a life now indwelt by the Spirit and made new in Christ. We are not saved by self-control, but we are saved into a life of self-control, for the Spirit who lives in us produces it. This unit takes up two related truths: the grace of self-control, which God grows in us, and the besetting sin, the particular weakness that so easily trips each of us. The goal is not to earn God's favor by mastering ourselves, but to walk out the grace already given, letting the Spirit win the daily battle.
I. El Dominio Propio Es Fruto del EspírituI. Self-Control Is a Fruit of the Spirit
Self-control is not first a matter of gritted teeth and iron willpower; it is fruit. Paul writes, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law" (Galatians 5:22–23, NKJV). Fruit grows from a living root; it is produced by the Spirit in the believer, not manufactured by the flesh. This is why an unbeliever, however disciplined, cannot produce this fruit, and why the believer must lean on the Spirit and not merely on resolve. We do work and we do strive — but we strive in the strength the Spirit supplies, looking to Him for the power we do not have in ourselves.
II. El Pecado DominanteII. The Besetting Sin
Every believer carries some particular weakness that trips him more than others — what older writers called the besetting sin. "Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1, NKJV). For one it is anger; for another it is lust, or pride, or fear, or the tongue, or strong drink, or laziness. The first step is honesty: to name it before God rather than excuse it. Solomon warns what happens when a man has no command over himself: "Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls" (Proverbs 25:28, NKJV). A city without walls lies open to every enemy; so does a heart without self-control.
III. Una Mirada Más Cercana: la IraIII. A Closer Look: Anger
Anger is perhaps the most common besetting sin, so the Scriptures give it special attention. Anger itself is not always sin — God Himself is angry at evil — but it turns to sin quickly: "'Be angry, and do not sin': do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil" (Ephesians 4:26–27, NKJV). James shows the path of wisdom: "let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God" (James 1:19–20, NKJV). From the Scriptures we can draw simple, God-given helps. First, a gentle answer: "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1, NKJV) — Abigail's calm, careful words turned David away from bloodshed (1 Samuel 25). Second, a holy delay — be slow to speak, giving the heart time to cool before the mouth opens. Third, the grace to overlook: "The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his glory is to overlook a transgression" (Proverbs 19:11, NKJV) — David spared Saul again and again, refusing to repay insult for insult (1 Samuel 24). Not every offense must be answered; much of peace is learning what to let pass.
IV. Hacer Morir el PecadoIV. Putting Sin to Death
Self-control is not only resisting; it is also putting sin to death at the root. "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live" (Romans 8:13, NKJV). Notice that it is by the Spirit that we put sin to death — not by the flesh's own willpower. Paul commands the same: "Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth" (Colossians 3:5, NKJV). And sometimes the wisest battle is flight rather than a fair fight: "Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace" (2 Timothy 2:22, NKJV). We starve the besetting sin and feed the new life.
V. Andar en el EspírituV. Walking by the Spirit
How then do we win? Not by trying harder in our own strength, but by walking in step with the Spirit. "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh" (Galatians 5:16, NKJV). There is a real war inside the believer: "For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another" (Galatians 5:17, NKJV). Victory does not come by pretending the flesh is already dead, nor by fighting it with the flesh's own weapons, but by yielding to the Spirit moment by moment. We are responsible to walk; the power to walk is His.
The disciplined life is not a way to earn God's acceptance — that was settled at the cross and is received by faith. It is the way a saved person lives out the grace already given, letting the Spirit master what we cannot master alone. Name your besetting sin honestly. Bring it daily to the Lord. Lean on the Spirit, who alone produces the fruit of self-control. A heart ruled by the Spirit is a city with strong walls — and the grace that saved you is more than enough to keep you.
