Utangulizi — Walipo Wawili au Watatu WamekusanyikaIntroduction — Where Two or Three Are Gathered
A church is people, and wherever people are gathered, there will be conflict. Anyone who promises you a church without friction is selling you a fellowship that does not exist this side of heaven. The question is never whether conflict will come; it is whether the leader will know what to do when it does. And here we must be careful, because the world has taught us two equally wrong reflexes. The first is to avoid all conflict, to keep the peace at any price, to let the wound fester under a smile. The second is to fight, to win, to treat the brother across the table as an enemy to be defeated. Scripture gives us a third way — neither the cowardice that ignores sin nor the cruelty that crushes the sinner, but a patient, loving, restorative process aimed at one goal: to gain your brother. That goal will govern this entire unit. We do not discipline to punish. We discipline to restore.
I. Aina Mbili za MigogoroI. Two Kinds of Conflict
Before we reach for any process, we must learn to tell two very different things apart, because treating one like the other does enormous damage. There is conflict that is merely a difference, and there is conflict that involves sin. Much of what troubles a church is the first kind — two godly people who simply disagree about the color of the carpet, the style of the music, the direction of a ministry. No one has sinned. These are matters of preference and wisdom, and they call for patience, listening, and a willingness to prefer one another.
But some conflict involves actual sin — a brother has done real wrong, and the matter cannot be settled by compromise because righteousness is at stake. The leader who treats a sin problem as a mere personality clash will fail to confront what God commands him to confront. And the leader who treats a simple difference of opinion as if it were sin will turn a disagreement into a heresy trial and wound the innocent. So the first act of wisdom in any conflict is discernment: is this a difference, or is this sin? The answer determines everything that follows. For honest differences, seek peace and mutual deference. For sin, there is a process the Lord Himself laid down.
II. Utaratibu wa Bwana Mwenyewe: Mathayo 18II. The Lord's Own Process: Matthew 18
Dhambi inapohusika, hatuachwi tubuni wenyewe. "Na ndugu yako akikukosa, enenda ukamwonye, wewe na yeye peke yenu; akikusikia, umempata nduguyo" (Mathayo 18:15).When sin is involved, we are not left to improvise. The Lord Jesus gave the church a precise, escalating process, and its genius is that it begins as small and private as possible and grows only as large as it must. "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother" (Matthew 18:15).
Angalia mambo manne katika mstari huo mmoja. Kwanza, wewe unaenda — aliyekosewa ndiye anayechukua hatua; hasubiri, wala hautangazi uchungu wake kwa wengine. Notice four things in that one verse. First, you go — the offended one takes the initiative; he does not wait, nor broadcast the offense to others. Second, it is private — "between you and him alone," the smallest possible circle. Third, the aim is stated plainly — "you have gained your brother," not won the argument, not exposed the wrongdoer, but gained him back. And fourth, most matters end right here, at step one, in private, and no one else ever needs to know. If every believer obeyed only this first verse, the vast majority of church conflicts would die quietly in a private conversation and never metastasize into the public bitterness that splits congregations.
Only if that private appeal fails does the circle widen, and even then by the smallest increment: "But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established" (Matthew 18:16). Not a crowd — one or two, for confirmation and help, another careful, loving appeal. And only if that also fails does it become the church's matter: "And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church" (Matthew 18:17). The progression is always from the smallest circle outward, never the reverse. The sin that could have been healed in private is brought before the body only as a last resort, when a brother has hardened himself against repeated, loving appeals.
III. Lengo Daima ni UrejeshoIII. The Goal Is Always Restoration
Hold on to the purpose, because everything in Matthew 18 is bent toward it: to gain your brother. Even the final, painful step — "let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector" (Matthew 18:17) — is not the church taking vengeance. It is the sorrowful recognition that a man has chosen his sin over his Savior and his fellowship, a removal designed to wake him up, not to throw him away. And remember who said it: this is the same Jesus who ate with tax collectors and sinners, who went looking for them. Even being "like a tax collector" is, in His mouth, not the end of pursuit but a different form of it.
Paulo anatuonyesha urejesho ukikamilika. Paul shows us the restoration completed. In Corinth a man under discipline had repented, and Paul writes: "you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow... reaffirm your love to him" (2 Corinthians 2:7-8). There is the whole point in one line. Discipline that has done its work ends not in permanent exile but in forgiveness, comfort, and the public reaffirming of love. The leader who disciplines without yearning for that reunion has missed the heart of God, who "does not afflict willingly" (Lamentations 3:33) and who disciplines those He loves precisely so He may restore them.
IV. Hali Ngumu: Kuondolewa KunapohitajikaIV. The Hard Case: When Removal Is Required
There is a sterner word that must be spoken, because love is not the same as the refusal to act. Sometimes a sin is so serious, so public, and so unrepented that the church must, for a season, remove the person from its fellowship — not in cruelty, but in faithfulness. In Corinth there was open, unrepented immorality of a kind that even the pagans did not condone, and the church was proud of its tolerance. Paul was horrified, and his command was unflinching: "deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus" (1 Corinthians 5:5).
Read even that severe sentence to its end: that his spirit may be saved. The most extreme act of church discipline in all of Scripture still has a redemptive aim — it is surgery, not execution. Paul's concern is twofold: the man himself, who must be shocked out of a sin that is destroying him, and the whole body, for "a little leaven leavens the whole lump" (1 Corinthians 5:6). A church that tolerates flagrant, unrepented sin among its members is not being gracious; it is allowing infection to spread through the body. So there are times to act decisively. But even then the goal is never to be rid of a person — it is to save the body from corruption and to bring the sinner, painfully, back to his senses and back to Christ.
V. Upatanisho Hauwezi KusubiriV. Reconciliation Cannot Wait
Yesu analikataza. "Basi ukileta sadaka yako madhabahuni, na huko ukakumbuka ya kuwa ndugu yako ana neno juu yako, iache sadaka yako mbele ya madhabahu, uende zako, upatane kwanza na ndugu yako, kisha urudi uitoe sadaka yako" (Mathayo 5:23-24).Now turn the lens around, because conflict is rarely one-sided, and the Lord puts startling urgency on the offender's responsibility too. Most of us, when we have wronged someone, prefer to let time do the work and hope the matter quietly fades. Jesus forbids it. "If you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift" (Matthew 5:23-24).
Nenda haraka. Nenda kwanza. Upatanisho hauwezi kusubiri wakati unaofaa.Sit with how radical that is. You are at the very moment of worship, your offering in your hands, and you remember that someone has a grievance against you. Christ says: stop. Leave the gift. Go put it right first. He will not accept the worship of a man who is content to stay at odds with his brother. The vertical relationship with God and the horizontal relationship with people are tied together, and you cannot be right with the One while you refuse to make peace with the other. The lesson for every member, and first of all for the leader, is plain: do not let conflict sit. The longer a grievance ages, the harder it sets, like mortar. Go quickly. Go first. Reconciliation cannot wait for a convenient season.
VI. Jawabu la Upole na BarazaVI. A Soft Answer and a Council
Scripture also fills our hands with practical wisdom for the heat of the moment. "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1). How much conflict in the church is created not by the issue itself but by the tone in which it is handled? The same hard truth, spoken gently, heals; spoken harshly, wounds. A leader must learn the discipline of the soft answer, especially when he is provoked — for the wrath he turns away is often his own.
And when a genuine dispute threatens to divide the whole body, Scripture even gives us a model for corporate conflict resolution. In Acts 15 the early church faced a furious controversy that could have split it in two. They did not paper it over, and they did not let the loudest voices win. They gathered the leaders, they let both sides speak fully, they searched the Scriptures, they sought the mind of the Spirit, and they reached a decision the whole body could own: "it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us" (Acts 15:28). There is a pattern for handling the serious disputes that will come: not avoidance, not domination, but open, prayerful, Scripture-governed deliberation that seeks a resolution the body can carry together.
VII. Roho Ambayo Tunafanya Yote HayoVII. The Spirit in Which We Do It All
Finally, the manner matters as much as the method, because the same process carried out in a hard spirit becomes its own sin. Hear the tone Scripture requires even of correction: "restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted" (Galatians 6:1). The one who confronts must do so trembling at his own capacity to fall — "lest you also." Correction offered by a proud man is a weapon; correction offered by a humble one is medicine.
And over the whole of it stands the law of forgiveness, which the leader must both practice and teach. When Peter asked whether forgiving seven times was enough, Jesus answered, "up to seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:21-22) — and He told the parable of the servant forgiven a vast debt who then seized a fellow servant by the throat over a trifling one. The point lands on every one of us: we who have been forgiven an unpayable debt by God have no standing to hold a small one against a brother. So resolve conflict and exercise discipline, yes — confront clearly, act faithfully, do not let sin fester in the body. But do it all as a forgiven sinner among forgiven sinners, with a soft answer, in a spirit of gentleness, watching your own heart, and aiming every step at the goal the Lord set: not to win, not to punish, but to gain your brother and to keep the body whole.
