Here the counselee is a fellow pastor in crisis — wounded, ashamed, and often blindsided.

Hali YenyeweThe Situation

Forced termination is a wound a great many ministers carry. In one eighteen-month period around 1989, more than two thousand one hundred Southern Baptist ministers were forced out of their churches — a thirty-one percent rise over five years earlier — and most such terminations come without warning, about eighty percent of them. The blow is rarely just to a job. It is the loss of a calling, a home, a community, and very often an income, all at once: the next position, when it comes, usually pays less, and nearly sixty-three percent of the churches involved had forced out a pastor before. The man who sits across from the counselor is therefore not merely unemployed; he is grieving, ashamed, financially frightened, and frequently doubting whether God still has any use for him. George Morrel, counseling such men, returned again and again to one anchor — that Christ is King of the Church and can turn all things to good. The counselor's task is to be the brotherhood the man's own church failed to be, and to hold his shattered situation inside the sovereignty of God (Baptist Press, Dec. 19, 1989; Christianity Today, June 9, 1967, p. 6). Though this unit is framed around a terminated minister, the same ten steps apply to anyone who has lost a job — a layoff, a firing, a forced early retirement — for the grief, shame, and financial fear are much the same; the clergy-specific counsel below simply adapts to the person’s own situation.

Hatua Kumi, ZikitumikaThe Ten Steps, Applied

Hatua ya Kwanza · Awamu ya 1Step One · Stage 1

Panga Wakati na MahaliDetermine the Time and the Place

Go to him soon, because the wound is fresh and isolation sets in fast after a termination; a pastor who has just been dismissed often retreats in shame and waits for no one. But once you are together, be unhurried. Choose a place that is genuinely private and away from the eyes of the congregation that let him go — often somewhere other than a church building, which may now be painful ground. He needs to be able to weep, to rage, and to say things he would never say from a pulpit, without fear of being seen or repeated. Confidentiality is not a courtesy here; it is the floor the whole conversation stands on, and the counselor guards it absolutely.

Hatua ya Pili · Awamu ya 1Step Two · Stage 1

Sikiliza — Mwache Amimine Maumivu YakeListen — Let Him Pour Out the Hurt

Most terminated pastors were blindsided, and the first and deepest need is simply to be heard — not fixed, not judged, not advised. Let the hurt pour out: the anger at a committee or a faction, the sense of betrayal by people he served and loved, the grief, the fear for his family, the shame. Do not leap to defend the church's decision, and do not rush to assess who was at fault; both will come later, and both will land better once the man has been allowed to empty the cup of his pain. Resist the strong pastoral urge to make it better with a quick word. In this hour your silence and your steady presence say more than counsel could.

Hatua ya Tatu · Awamu ya 1Step Three · Stage 1

Fafanua HaliClarify the Situation

When he has been heard, help him sort the tangle gently. What actually happened, as best anyone can tell? What reasons were given, and do they match the real ones? Termination often has a stated cause and a truer cause beneath it. Clarify the practical realities too — the finances, the housing, the timeline, the effect on his wife and children — because fear of these often hides under the spiritual distress. And clarify where he stands with God: is he doubting his call, angry at the Lord, ashamed before Him? The counselor does not force conclusions about fault at this stage; he simply helps the man see his own situation clearly, which the fog of shock had blurred.

Find out who else, if anyone, is walking with him. Has his denomination or association offered help? Are other pastors standing by him, or has he hidden the termination out of shame? Has he sought financial counsel, or professional help if the blow has driven him into depression? Is he still in contact with his seminary? Isolation is the great danger to a terminated minister, and this step exists to break it. The counselor's aim is not to be the man's only support but to connect him to a web of support — brothers, denominational resources, and, where the wound has gone medical or psychiatric, those trained to treat what a fellow pastor cannot.

This is the most delicate step in the unit, because fault is genuinely hard to assess. Some pastors are terminated for real incompetence or moral failure; others are forced out precisely for faithfully preaching the Word and being judged by the standards of the world rather than of Scripture. The counselor must not assume either story. Where there was real sin, gentleness does not mean evasion — it means honest acknowledgment that opens a path toward repentance and restoration. Where the man was faithful and simply rejected, the counselor's work is the opposite: to free him from a false guilt that would otherwise crush him. In both cases he helps the man examine himself honestly before God without either whitewashing the truth or grinding him into the ground.

Hatua ya Sita · Awamu ya 2Step Six · Stage 2

Kuwa KielelezoModel the Role

George Morrel's counsel was to remind the terminated pastor that Christ is King of the Church and can turn all things to good (Romans 8:28). The counselor cannot merely say this; he must embody it. He models a steady faith that rests its weight on God's sovereign rule over the Church rather than on the verdict of a committee or the size of a salary. Just as importantly, in simply showing up and staying, he models the brotherhood the man's own congregation failed to give him — proof in the flesh that he has not been cast off by the whole body of Christ. A counselor who is himself anxious and bitter on the man's behalf gives him nothing to lean on; a counselor who is steady lends him a faith he can borrow until his own returns.

Hatua ya Saba · Awamu ya 2Step Seven · Stage 2

Pitia Njia MbadalaReview the Alternatives

Lay the real roads before him. He may stay in ministry and seek another call; he may take secular work for a season to steady his family; he may need to relocate; where there was moral failure, he may enter a process of restoration. Each is honorable in its place, and the counselor presents them without dictating. He is honest about the financial reality — that the next position often pays less — and helps with practical, concrete financial planning rather than leaving it as a vague dread. He encourages the man to keep contact with his seminary as a source of counsel and support. And he gently warns against two opposite errors: grabbing the first 'greater field of service' out of sheer desperation, and, in the future, being lured away from a good and faithful post by that same restless phrase.

Hatua ya Nane · Awamu ya 2Step Eight · Stage 2

Chunguza MatokeoExplore the Outcomes

Walk each road far enough that he can see where it leads. The path of nursed bitterness leads one place — out of ministry, often, and into a resentment that poisons the man and his family for years; the path of honest grief given over to God leads toward healing and, frequently, toward fruitful ministry again. The counselor is honest about the cost of each option, including the real toll on a wife and children who have lost their home and standing along with him. He does not promise a quick restoration or a better church around the corner; he does help the man see that his choices now, made in trust rather than panic, will shape whether this wound becomes a grave or a doorway.

Hatua ya Tisa · Awamu ya 2Step Nine · Stage 2

Toa HabariSupply Information

Now the counselor brings the word of God and concrete help plainly to bear. Scripture first: Christ as the King and Head of His Church, who is not bound by any committee's vote; the promise of Romans 8:28; the long line of faithful servants — the prophets, and the Lord Himself — who were rejected by the very people they came to serve, so that the man knows his suffering is not a sign of God's abandonment. Then the practical information his situation demands: denominational and associational resources, avenues of financial assistance, the standing offer of his seminary's counsel, and the names of brothers ready to help. Morrel's anchor is spoken aloud and pressed home — Christ is King of the Church, and He can turn even this to good.

Hatua ya Kumi · Awamu ya 2Step Ten · Stage 2

Toa HitimishoProvide Closure

Closure with a terminated pastor is never a single conversation that settles everything; the wound is too deep and the road too long for that. It is ongoing support over time through the fellowship of fellow pastors — walking with the brother through the months of transition, whether toward re-entry into ministry, a season of other work, or a process of restoration where there was moral failure. The counselor keeps checking in through the long valley, especially at the lonely points when the casseroles have stopped coming and the phone has gone quiet. Real closure here looks like a brotherhood that simply refuses to let the man disappear — and that, more than any single word of advice, is what carries him through to the other side.
