Utangulizi: Bila Roho, Uinjilisti ni Juhudi za Kibinadamu TuOrientation: Without the Spirit, Evangelism Is Human Effort
The first three units established what evangelism is, the seven propositions and three patterns that shape it, and the four-point content that gives it substance. But content and conviction alone do not produce conversion. Evangelism is a spiritual work involving the transformation of the human heart, and that work cannot be accomplished by human ability—no matter how well-trained, articulate, or sincere the witness may be. Many failures and frustrations in evangelism come from trying to do in human strength what only God can do.
When the role of the Holy Spirit is neglected, evangelism becomes mechanical, pressured, and often ineffective. When His role is properly understood, evangelism becomes an act of dependence, faithfulness, and confidence in God. This unit examines the Spirit's essential work in five movements—conviction, drawing, regeneration, empowerment, and guidance—then warns of the danger of neglecting Him and closes with the practical posture of faithful dependence. The thesis is simple: the witness speaks the word; the Spirit does the work.
I. Roho Anauhakikishia Ulimwengu Habari ya DhambiI. The Spirit Convicts of Sin
Yesu aliieleza waziwazi kazi ya kwanza ya Roho katika uinjilisti:Jesus made the Spirit's first evangelistic work explicit:
(Yohana 16:8, SUV)"And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment." (John 16:8, NKJV)
The word "convict" carries the sense of exposing, convincing, bringing into the light. Conviction is not merely making someone feel guilty; it is the Spirit of God revealing to the sinner the true nature of his sin, the righteousness of God against which he has offended, and the reality of the judgment that awaits. No evangelist can produce this through argument or persuasion. A speaker may explain sin clearly, but only the Spirit can cause a person to see it personally and respond to it genuinely. The Spirit works through the Word, applying it to the conscience. Without this divine conviction, the sinner remains complacent, unmoved by either the threat of judgment or the offer of grace.
The witness must therefore pray for the Spirit's convicting work. Efforts to manufacture conviction through emotional manipulation or fear tactics are not only unbiblical but counterproductive, producing false converts rather than true penitents. The Welsh Revival of 1904 and the Korean Revival of 1907 were marked above all by deep, Spirit-wrought conviction of sin across entire communities, and from that conviction came lasting conversions—not from clever methods, but from the work of God upon the heart.
II. Roho Anamvuta Mwenye DhambiII. The Spirit Draws the Sinner
Wokovu haunzishwi na mwanadamu, bali na Mungu. Yesu alilitangaza jambo hili waziwazi:Salvation is not initiated by man, but by God. Jesus declared it plainly:
"Hakuna mtu awezaye kuja kwangu, asipovutwa na Baba aliyenipeleka; nami nitamfufua siku ya mwisho." (Yohana 6:44, SUV)"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:44, NKJV)
The evangelist is not responsible for creating spiritual desire. The Spirit of God works within the heart, drawing the sinner toward Christ. And remarkably, Paul told the philosophers at Mars Hill that God is already at work in this drawing before the witness ever arrives:
"ili wamtafute Mungu, ingekuwa labda wapapase-papase wamwone; ingawa hakai mbali na kila mmoja wetu." (Matendo 17:27, SUV)"so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us." (Acts 17:27, NKJV)
This truth removes the pressure from the evangelist and places confidence in God. If salvation depended on human persuasion, no one would be saved. But because God draws, the believer can speak with hope, knowing the Spirit is already at work even when no immediate response is visible. Our part is to plant and water faithfully; the drawing belongs to Him.
III. Roho Anatoa Uzima Mpya (Kuzaliwa Upya)III. The Spirit Gives New Life (Regeneration)
It is about new birth. Jesus told Nicodemus, "that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6, NKJV). This new birth cannot be produced by a decision alone. It is the work of the Spirit of God. A person may respond outwardly to a message, but without the Spirit's regenerating work there is no true transformation. Regeneration is the Spirit's act of imparting spiritual life to a soul dead in sin:
(Waefeso 2:1, SUV)"And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins." (Ephesians 2:1, NKJV)
Shahidi humtegemea Roho kutoa uzima — hategemei mbinu kuuzalisha. Before regeneration a person cannot see the kingdom of God, let alone enter it. After regeneration, the eyes are opened, the heart is softened, and faith becomes possible. This is why evangelism must go beyond securing decisions. The goal is not a raised hand or a signed card; the goal is genuine conversion, which is exclusively the Spirit's work. The witness depends on the Spirit to give life—he does not trust the method to produce it.
IV. Roho Anamtia Nguvu ShahidiIV. The Spirit Empowers the Witness
Yesu aliwaambia wanafunzi wake:While the Spirit works in the heart of the sinner, He also works in the life of the believer. Jesus told His disciples:
(Matendo 1:8, SUV)"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8, NKJV)
Yohana anatukumbusha kwamba upako huu unakaa daima ndani ya mwamini:The ability to speak, the courage to witness, and the clarity to present the gospel all come from the Spirit. Evangelism does not depend on personality, training, or natural ability—it is empowered by God. Every believer, regardless of background or skill, can be used in evangelism when yielded to the Spirit. Pentecost itself was the proof: ordinary fishermen, filled with the Spirit, preached so that three thousand were saved in a single day. John reminds us that this anointing is permanent in the believer:
(1 Yohana 2:27, SUV)"But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie." (1 John 2:27, NKJV)
This empowerment is not a one-time event but a continual filling. Paul commands, "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18, NKJV). A Spirit-filled believer speaks boldly, loves genuinely, and presents the gospel with supernatural effectiveness. The opposite is also true: when a believer relies on his own strength, his witness becomes weak, fearful, and unconvincing.
V. Roho Anaongoza katika UinjilistiV. The Spirit Guides in Evangelism
The Holy Spirit not only empowers but also guides. In the book of Acts, believers were repeatedly directed by the Spirit in where to go and what to do. Philip was led to the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26–29). Paul was redirected mid-journey toward Macedonia (Acts 16:6–10). This guidance may not always be dramatic, but it is real. The Spirit gives discernment in conversations, wisdom in timing, and sensitivity to the needs of individuals. This is why evangelism must be carried out with attentiveness to God, not merely adherence to a method. A rigid script may help with clarity, but it cannot replace the Spirit's leading.
Prayer is the primary means of seeking this guidance. Before engaging in evangelism, the believer should ask the Spirit to open doors, to bring the right words, and to prepare the heart of the hearer. After the conversation, the believer should thank the Spirit for whatever was accomplished, trusting that even unseen work has been done.
VI. Hatari ya Kumpuuza RohoVI. The Danger of Neglecting the Spirit
When the role of the Holy Spirit is neglected, several problems arise. First, evangelism becomes mechanical rather than spiritual. Methods are followed without dependence on God. Second, pressure replaces persuasion. The evangelist tries to force a response rather than trusting the Spirit to work. Third, results are misinterpreted: outward decisions are assumed to be true conversions without evidence of new life. The history of evangelism is filled with examples of well-intentioned methods that produced nominal Christians—people who made a profession but showed no fruit. This happens when the Spirit is bypassed in favor of technique.
Mwamini anayejaribu kuufanya bila Roho anajaribu jambo lisilowezekana. There is also an enemy dimension that must not be forgotten. The Enemy is constantly undermining the witnessing activity—blinding minds, distracting hearts, and stirring opposition. Paul wrote that "the god of this age has blinded the minds of those who do not believe" (2 Corinthians 4:4, NKJV). Evangelism is therefore not merely educational or persuasive work; it is spiritual warfare. The believer who attempts it without the Spirit attempts the impossible.
VII. Kumtegemea Roho kwa UaminifuVII. Faithful Dependence on the Spirit
Kama Paulo alivyoandika, "utoshelevu wetu watoka kwa Mungu" (2 Wakorintho 3:5, SUV).The proper response to these truths is not passivity, but dependence. The believer must pray for the Spirit's work, rely on Him in conversation, and trust Him for results. At the same time, the believer must speak, explain, and proclaim the gospel clearly. Dependence on the Spirit does not remove responsibility—it defines how responsibility is carried out. As Paul wrote, "our sufficiency is from God" (2 Corinthians 3:5, NKJV).
Consider two approaches to evangelism. One relies entirely on technique: the presentation is polished, the arguments clear, the structure well-practiced—yet there is little prayer, little dependence on God, and little awareness of the Spirit's work. The other also prepares and presents clearly, but does so with prayer, humility, and dependence on God. The difference is not in effort but in dependence. A farmer can prepare the soil perfectly, but he cannot make the seed grow. That power belongs to God alone. Similarly, an evangelist can present the gospel with perfect clarity, but only the Spirit can cause it to take root in the heart.
Kama Paulo anavyohitimisha:The Holy Spirit is central to all true evangelism. He convicts of sin, draws the sinner, gives new life, empowers the believer, and guides the process. Without Him, evangelism becomes mere human effort. With Him, it becomes a work of divine power. The evangelist must therefore labor faithfully, speak clearly, and depend completely on the Spirit of God for the results. As Paul concludes:
"Basi, apandaye si kitu, wala atiaye maji si kitu; bali Mungu akuzaye." (1 Wakorintho 3:7, SUV)"So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase." (1 Corinthians 3:7, NKJV)
A prayer for the student: Lord, teach us to rely on Your Spirit. Forgive us for the times we have trusted in methods rather than in You. Fill us with boldness, guide our words, and convict the hearts of those who hear. We ask for nothing less than the power that raised Christ from the dead, working through our feeble witness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
