Forced termination is a wound a great many ministers carry. Go to him soon, because the wound is fresh and isolation sets in fast after a termination; a pastor who has just been dismissed often retreats in shame and waits for no one. But once you are together, be unhurried. Choose a place that is genuinely private and away from the eyes of the congregation that let him go — often somewhere other than a church building, which may now be painful ground. He needs to be able to weep, to rage, and to say things he would never say from a pulpit, without fear of being seen or repeated. Most terminated pastors were blindsided, and the first and deepest need is simply to be heard — not fixed, not judged, not advised. When he has been heard, help him sort the tangle gently. What actually happened, as best anyone can tell? What reasons were given, and do they match the real ones? Termination often has a stated cause and a truer cause beneath it. Clarify the practical realities too — the finances, the housing, the timeline, the effect on his wife and children — because fear of these often hides under the spiritual distress. And clarify where he stands with God: is he doubting his call, angry at the Lord, ashamed before Him? The counselor does not force conclusions about fault at this stage; he simply helps the man see his own situation clearly, which the fog of shock had blurred.

Find out who else, if anyone, is walking with him. Has his denomination or association offered help? Are other pastors standing by him, or has he hidden the termination out of shame? Has he sought financial counsel, or professional help if the blow has driven him into depression? Is he still in contact with his seminary? Isolation is the great danger to a terminated minister, and this step exists to break it. The counselor's aim is not to be the man's only support but to connect him to a web of support — brothers, denominational resources, and, where the wound has gone medical or psychiatric, those trained to treat what a fellow pastor cannot.

This is the most delicate step in the unit, because fault is genuinely hard to assess. Some pastors are terminated for real incompetence or moral failure; others are forced out precisely for faithfully preaching the Word and being judged by the standards of the world rather than of Scripture. The counselor must not assume either story. Where there was real sin, gentleness does not mean evasion — it means honest acknowledgment that opens a path toward repentance and restoration. Where the man was faithful and simply rejected, the counselor's work is the opposite: to free him from a false guilt that would otherwise crush him. In both cases he helps the man examine himself honestly before God without either whitewashing the truth or grinding him into the ground.

He may stay in ministry and seek another call; he may take secular work for a season to steady his family; he may need to relocate; where there was moral failure, he may enter a process of restoration. Each is honorable in its place, and the counselor presents them without dictating. He is honest about the financial reality — that the next position often pays less — and helps with practical, concrete financial planning rather than leaving it as a vague dread. He encourages the man to keep contact with his seminary as a source of counsel and support. And he gently warns against two opposite errors: grabbing the first 'greater field of service' out of sheer desperation, and, in the future, being lured away from a good and faithful post by that same restless phrase.

The path of nursed bitterness leads one place — out of ministry, often, and into a resentment that poisons the man and his family for years; the path of honest grief given over to God leads toward healing and, frequently, toward fruitful ministry again. The counselor is honest about the cost of each option, including the real toll on a wife and children who have lost their home and standing along with him. He does not promise a quick restoration or a better church around the corner; he does help the man see that his choices now, made in trust rather than panic, will shape whether this wound becomes a grave or a doorway.
