Applying Drakeford's Ten-Step Model to Real Situations — Unit 5: Marital ConflictAplicando el Modelo de Diez Pasos de Drakeford a Situaciones Reales — Unidad 5: El Conflicto Conyugal
The aim is not for one spouse to win, but for a wounded relationship to be healed.
A husband and wife come to the pastor with a marriage in conflict — or, just as often, one of them comes alone, carrying a complaint about the other. The fights may be over money, in-laws, children, intimacy, or a hundred smaller things, but the recurring quarrel on the surface is rarely the real wound. Beneath it usually lies a person who feels unloved, disrespected, unheard, or betrayed, and a pattern of relating that has hardened over years until each knows exactly how to hurt the other. The counselor's task is not to act as judge, deciding who is right, but to help two people who once loved each other turn back toward one another and toward God. That requires hearing both sides, refusing to take sides prematurely, and holding out a higher aim than winning — the reconciliation and rebuilding of the marriage itself, for the glory of God who designed it.
⚠ Standing Safeguard — sharpest here. The course-wide rule has real teeth in marital work: a pastor must never counsel the opposite-gender spouse alone behind a closed door or in a private home. Counsel the couple together wherever possible; when meeting one spouse, keep the door open, a window in view, or another person — often the pastor's wife or a mature woman — present or nearby. This protects the counselee, guards the pastor from temptation in an emotionally charged setting where a hurting spouse may transfer affection onto a listening pastor, and guards him from any accusation that could destroy his ministry. Where there is any sign of physical abuse, the counselor does not press for "reconciliation" that returns a spouse to danger; safety comes first, and he involves the proper help.
Determine the Time and the PlaceDeterminar el Tiempo y el Lugar
Set a time unhurried enough for both spouses to speak, and a place that is private, neutral, and safe — and that honors the safeguard above. A couple in conflict needs to know the conversation will not be rushed and will not be overheard, because the things they must say are tender and easily shamed. Where possible, see them together, so that neither builds a private alliance with the pastor against the other; the marriage, not one spouse, is the counselee. When circumstances force you to begin with one alone, keep the setting open and make clear from the start that you will want to hear the other as well. The neutrality of time and place quietly signals the neutrality of the counselor himself.
Listen — to Both, Without Taking SidesEscuchar — a Ambos, sin Tomar Partido
Let each spouse tell the story as they see it, and listen to both with equal care before forming any judgment. This is the hardest discipline in marital counseling, because the first vivid account is persuasive and the counselor is tempted to side with it. Resist. Give each one uninterrupted time while the other listens — itself a healing exercise for a couple who have long since stopped hearing each other. Listen not only for the facts in dispute but for the wound beneath the words: the hurt, the fear, the longing to be valued. A spouse who feels truly heard by the pastor, and perhaps for the first time in months heard by the other, has already begun to soften. The Rogerian gift of empathy serves powerfully here — but, as always, the counselor listens in order to help, not merely to mirror.
Clarify the Situation — Name the Real IssueAclarar la Situación — Nombrar el Verdadero Problema
Help the couple move past the presenting fight to the real one. The argument they had this morning about money or the in-laws is usually a symptom; the disease is a deeper hurt — feeling unloved, disrespected, controlled, or abandoned. Gentle clarifying questions, asked of both, surface the pattern under the particular quarrels: "What do you hear your spouse saying about you when this happens?" Naming the real issue keeps the counselor from refereeing an endless series of surface disputes and lets him address the thing that actually keeps reproducing them. This is also where the counselor begins, quietly, to discern whether what he is facing is ordinary conflict, or something graver — addiction, adultery, or abuse — that will change the whole shape of the counsel.
Find out what has already been tried. Have they seen a counselor before, separated, involved family or friends, or read books and made attempts on their own? What helped, what failed, and why? This spares the counselor from prescribing what has already collapsed and tells him how deep the patterns run. It also marks the boundary of his competence: a marriage tangled with serious mental illness, addiction, chronic adultery, or abuse may exceed what a pastor should handle alone and call for a trained Christian marriage counselor working alongside him. Knowing the history lets him judge honestly whether he is the right and sufficient help, or one part of a larger team the couple needs.
Responsibility — Mutual, the Log in One's Own EyeResponsabilidad — Mutua, la Viga en el Propio Ojo
Here the counselor helps each spouse own his or her part — and the key word is each. In most conflicts both have contributed, and the gospel call is for each to look first at the log in his own eye before the speck in the other's (Matthew 7:3–5). This is gentle but firm work: it resists the universal instinct to catalog the other's failures and asks instead, "Where have you failed, and what is yours to confess and change?" The counselor never lets this become one-sided blame, and never applies it as blame to a victim of abuse — a battered spouse did not cause the violence. But for ordinary conflict, mutual responsibility is the doorway out: when each stops waiting for the other to change first and takes up his own repentance, the deadlock breaks.
Model the RoleModelar el Papel
In the session itself the counselor models the very things the marriage lacks. He listens without interrupting, disagrees without contempt, stays calm when the temperature rises, and treats each spouse with evident respect — showing, in real time, that two people can speak hard truths to each other without cruelty. A couple locked in a cycle of attack and defense often has simply never seen conflict handled any other way; the counselor's manner becomes a living demonstration. He also models, in his own marriage and bearing, that the patient, sacrificial love Scripture commands is actually possible. What he cannot embody he will struggle to teach, so the counselor guards his own marriage as part of his fitness for this work.
Review the AlternativesRepasar las Alternativas
Lay before the couple the real ways forward rather than dictating one. They can continue the present cycle and reap its bitter fruit; they can pursue genuine change — new patterns of speaking, listening, forgiving, and serving; they can bring in further help where the trouble runs deep. The counselor holds out reconciliation as the goal worth the hard work, but he presents the path as a series of concrete choices the couple must own: to forgive a specific wrong, to change a specific habit, to rebuild trust by specific acts over time. Decisions a couple reaches themselves are owned far more deeply than any the pastor imposes, and in a marriage that ownership by both partners is the very thing being rebuilt.
Explore the OutcomesExplorar los Resultados
Walk each road far enough that both can see where it leads. The path of contempt and withdrawal, left unchecked, leads to a cold house, wounded children, and often the wreck of the marriage; the path of repentance and forgiveness, though slower and harder, leads toward a love deeper than the one they began with. The counselor is honest that reconciliation is costly and rarely quick, and that rebuilt trust comes by many small faithful acts, not one grand gesture. He neither frightens them with threats nor sells them a fairy tale, but helps them see clearly that the choices they make now will shape not only their own future but the home their children will carry into their own marriages one day.
Now the counselor brings Scripture and practical wisdom plainly to bear. The Bible speaks directly to marriage: the mutual submission and sacrificial, Christlike love of Ephesians 5:21–33; the call to bear with one another and forgive as the Lord forgave in Colossians 3:13; the speaking of truth in love of Ephesians 4:15; the patient definition of love in 1 Corinthians 13. Alongside the Word he can supply practical tools — fair ways to disagree, the discipline of listening before answering, the habit of confession and quick repair, regular time together — always as servants of the biblical vision, never as mere technique. Where the trouble exceeds him, supplying information includes the names of trustworthy professional help.
Provide ClosureProveer Cierre
Marital healing is almost never the work of a single session, so closure here means a plan and a path, not a tidy ending. The counselor sends the couple out with concrete next steps each has owned, a date to return, and the open door of ongoing care. He follows up — marriages mend slowly, and the weeks after a hopeful conversation are when old patterns fight to reassert themselves. Closure is checking in, encouraging the small faithful steps, and walking with the couple through the long rebuilding of trust, pointing them again and again past each other to the God who joined them and who alone can renew their love. Where deeper help is needed, closure includes a faithful handoff and the pastor's continued, prayerful presence alongside it.
Marital conflict is the natural home of the Interpersonal insight: trouble lives between persons, not only within one, so the thing to be healed is the relationship, not merely two separate individuals. Within that view, Transactional Analysis (Eric Berne) offers a useful descriptive tool. Berne noticed that people speak from shifting ego states — a Parent voice that scolds or controls, a Child voice that sulks or rebels, and an Adult voice that reasons calmly — and that couples fall into repetitive "games," predictable exchanges that always end in the same hurt. Naming these patterns can help a husband and wife see what they keep doing to each other: she speaks as a critical Parent, he answers as a wounded Child, and the same fight runs its course again. The aim is to help them meet Adult-to-Adult, with respect, rather than in these reflexive roles.
The biblical caution. Transactional Analysis describes patterns but cannot redeem them; it is a map of the symptoms, not a cure. Left to itself it can let a spouse excuse cruelty as merely "the script I learned," dissolving responsibility into roles — exactly the move Step Five refuses. And it has no gospel: no forgiveness purchased at the cross, no power of the Spirit to put off the old self and put on the new, no call to the sacrificial love of Ephesians 5. So the pastor may gladly use its names to help a couple see their pattern, then set the tool down and bring the real remedy — repentance, forgiveness, and Christlike love — which no theory of communication can supply. The insight is picked up inside the steps; the frame remains the Word of God.
