This unit is written from inside the classical Pentecostal tradition, for students who belong to it. It is conservative and Trinitarian. On this subject our tradition is not of one mind. Both the Wesleyan-Holiness and the Finished Work views are held within classical Pentecostalism by faithful, Bible-believing denominations. We therefore present both as living convictions, with their best arguments, and we do not ask you to leave one family for the other. Course 1, Unit 4 told how the division arose in history. Here we ask what the Bible teaches and how each side reads it.

The word "sanctify" means to set apart for God and to make holy. In Scripture it has several sides.

It is God's will. "For this is the will of God, your sanctification" (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Holiness is not an extra for special believers. The writer to the Hebrews says, "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

It is already ours in Christ. Paul writes to the Corinthians, who had many faults, "And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God" (1 Corinthians 6:11). Christ "became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption" (1 Corinthians 1:30). Believers are set apart by the work of Christ.

It is also a process. "For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified" (Hebrews 10:14). The verse speaks of a finished work and of a continuing growth in the same sentence. Paul says of himself, "Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on" (Philippians 3:12).

It is the work of the Trinity. The Father sanctifies (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The Son's blood makes us holy, and Jesus prays, "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth" (John 17:17). The Spirit works in us daily.

Every Pentecostal agrees with all of this. The disagreement is about how the second and third sides fit together, and whether there is a definite, datable moment after conversion when sinful desires are cleansed.

Before we describe the two views, we should see how much both sides share.

Holiness is required. Peter writes, "Be holy, for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16). Neither view allows Christians to live as they please.

Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ's finished sacrifice. No one earns holiness by effort alone.

Spirit baptism is not the same as sanctification. Unit 4 explained that Spirit baptism is for power to witness. Having power and being holy are different things. The Corinthians had the gifts and were still immature.

4. Las lenguas no son prueba de santidad. La Unidad 5 lo dijo con claridad.4. Tongues are not proof of holiness. Unit 5 said this clearly.

Christians must keep growing until the Lord returns. Even the Holiness side does not say that growth ends.

With this shared base, let us describe the two views.

John Wesley taught that believers could be made perfect in love in this life. He called this Christian perfection or entire sanctification. He did not mean that a believer could not make mistakes or have weaknesses. He meant a heart so filled with love for God and neighbor that sin no longer rules it. Later, the Holiness movement of the 1800s taught that this could be received by faith in a definite crisis experience after conversion, often called "the second blessing." Course 1, Unit 2 described these roots.

The Pentecostal bodies that grew from the Holiness movement kept this teaching and added Spirit baptism. They speak of three works of grace: new birth, entire sanctification, and baptism in the Holy Spirit. Examples include the Pentecostal Holiness Church (now the International Pentecostal Holiness Church), the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) and the Church of God in Christ. Their official statements have said that sanctification is a work subsequent to new birth, though the way they word it has varied over time.

El argumento bíblicoThe biblical case

Los pentecostales de santidad señalan estos textos.Holiness Pentecostals point to these texts.

La palabra "por completo" sugiere una limpieza a fondo y no solo una mejora lenta.• Paul's prayer: "may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely" (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The word "completely" suggests a thorough cleansing and not only a slow improvement.

Dios no mandaría lo que no capacita para hacer.• Jesus' command: "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect" (Matthew 5:48). God would not command what He does not enable.

Pablo dice: asimismo vosotros, consideraos muertos al pecado, pero vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor (Romanos 6:11, paráfrasis).• The language in Romans 6 about being "dead indeed to sin" and presenting ourselves to God, which they read as calling for a decisive act of consecration. Paul says, "Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:11).

The experience of many saints, who testify to a clear moment when the Lord dealt with an inner struggle.

The Holiness side is troubled when Christians are told that conversion is all they need and then live in carelessness. Their fear is that without a second crisis, believers settle for a lower standard. They also hold that Spirit baptism is best received by a clean vessel.

In 1910, William H. Durham, a pastor in Chicago, began to preach what he called the Finished Work of Calvary. He taught that when a person is born again, the believer is sanctified in Christ, because Christ's work on the cross is complete. After that, sanctification is a life of growth, in which the believer daily puts to death the old nature by the Spirit's power. Spirit baptism is then a separate gift for power. Durham's teaching spread widely. When the Assemblies of God was formed in 1914, it took the Finished Work position, and many other Pentecostal bodies around the world have also held it. Course 1, Unit 4 told how the dispute divided the early movement.

Finished Work Pentecostals do not call themselves lax about holiness. They speak of positional sanctification (what Christ has done for us at conversion) and progressive sanctification (the lifelong growth that follows). They reject the idea of a second crisis that removes the sinful nature.

Finished Work Pentecostals point to these texts.

Una sola obra, con crecimiento continuo.• Hebrews 10:14, where one offering has "perfected forever" and yet believers are "being sanctified." One work, with ongoing growth.

Lo leen como una advertencia contra afirmar que la naturaleza pecaminosa ha desaparecido.• 1 John 1:8: "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." They read this as warning against claiming that the sinful nature is gone.

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected" (Philippians 3:12). If even Paul pressed on, no believer should claim to have arrived.

The Finished Work side is troubled when salvation seems to depend on a later experience, or when believers are made anxious about whether they have "received it." They want to keep the cross at the center, and to keep every believer confident in Christ's completed work.

Put simply, the question is this: Is there a definite second work, after conversion, in which God cleanses the heart from inward sin, or is sanctification begun at conversion and carried on throughout life?

The Wesleyan-Holiness answer is yes to the first. The Finished Work answer is yes to the second. Both sides affirm the same Savior, the same Spirit, the same Bible and the same call to holy living. This is a difference within one family, and we should treat it as such. Many congregations on both sides have worked side by side in missions and fellowship.

Pentecostals are not the only ones to have thought about sanctification, and other Christians raise their own questions about both views.

The Reformed critique. Reformed and many other evangelical teachers hold that sanctification is progressive from conversion to the end of life, and that no one reaches a state in this life where sin is removed. They criticize the Holiness view of a second crisis as having little clear support in the New Testament, and as risking pride or despair when people do not reach what they were promised.

The Keswick view. Keswick teaching, which Course 1 described, spoke of a "higher life" of surrender and victory, yet usually not of the removal of the sinful nature. It influenced many early Pentecostals.

The criticism of the Finished Work view. Some Holiness voices and others say that the Finished Work position can allow believers to be content with sin, as long as they believe they are positionally holy.

Respuesta pentecostal. Pentecostal reply. To the Reformed critics, both of our families answer that holiness is not optional and is the Spirit's work, and that Scripture's commands to be holy show that God expects real change. The Holiness side adds that the New Testament speaks of cleansing that goes beyond mere growth. The Finished Work side agrees with much that the Reformed say about progressive growth, and sees no reason why this makes it less Pentecostal, since Spirit baptism is a separate empowering. To the criticism of lax living, the Finished Work side answers that its own teaching demands daily death to sin, and that pastors who teach it should teach holiness firmly. To the criticism of perfectionism, the Holiness side answers that Wesley himself taught perfect love and not freedom from weakness, and that pastors should teach this carefully and not burden people with false claims.

We recognize that on this subject godly teachers will go on disagreeing until the Lord returns. Paul's prayer in our key verse is one that all of us pray: that God Himself would sanctify us completely, and keep us blameless until His coming.

Enseñanza práctica para pastoresPractical Teaching for Pastors

Whatever your church's position, these steps help.

Know your own denomination's statement and teach it clearly. Do not apologize for it, and do not use it as a weapon against others.

Teach the cross. Holiness begins with what Christ has done.

3. Enseñe juntas la Palabra y el Espíritu. "Santifícalos en tu verdad" (Juan 17:17, paráfrasis).3. Teach the Word and the Spirit together. "Sanctify them by Your truth" (John 17:17).

Beware of two errors. One is legalism: treating rules about clothing or customs as the measure of holiness. The other is carelessness: treating grace as permission to sin.

Do not judge members by a single experience. Look at their love, truthfulness, forgiveness and faithfulness.

Welcome believers from the other side. A Holiness pastor and a Finished Work pastor can cooperate in prayer and mission.

Algo debe andar mal conmigo".A man named Tomás has been a believer for two years. He has a quick temper, and he has just lost his temper with his family. He comes to the pastor in tears, saying, "I was filled with the Spirit last year, but I am still angry. Something must be wrong with me."

If the pastor belongs to a Holiness church, he may tell Tomás that the Lord promises to deal with the roots of anger, and invite him to bring this need to the Lord in humble consecration, asking God for cleansing and trusting His promise.

If the pastor belongs to a Finished Work church, he may tell Tomás that he is already sanctified in Christ, and that the Spirit now helps him to put to death the old habits daily, with repentance, prayer, accountability and the Word.

In either church, the pastor does the following. He listens without condemning. He explains that being filled with the Spirit for power does not by itself end every fault. He points Tomás to Christ's forgiveness (1 John 1:9). He urges him to ask his family's forgiveness, and he walks beside him in prayer and practical steps. The pastor never tells Tomás that his anger proves he was never filled, nor that his tongues have no meaning.

ResumenSummary

Sanctification means being set apart for God and made holy. It is God's will, it is ours already in Christ, it is a process, and it is the work of the Trinity. Both classical Pentecostal families agree that holiness is required, that salvation is by grace, and that Spirit baptism is not the same as sanctification. The Wesleyan-Holiness view, held by bodies such as the Pentecostal Holiness Church, the Church of God (Cleveland) and the Church of God in Christ, teaches a second definite work of entire sanctification after conversion, and then Spirit baptism as a third. The Finished Work view, taught by William H. Durham from 1910 and held by the Assemblies of God since 1914, teaches that believers are sanctified in Christ at conversion and grow progressively, with Spirit baptism as a separate empowerment. Reformed, Keswick and other critics question the second crisis, and some Holiness voices question the Finished Work view. Both sides reply from Scripture. Pastors should teach their own tradition clearly, honor the other, and always preach the cross and a holy life.
