1. The Question Before the Question 1. La pregunta antes de la pregunta

Before a pastor asks what a passage means, he must ask one earlier question: what kind of writing am I reading? The Bible is not one genre. It is a library of many genres bound between two covers — letters, royal chronicles, poetry, visionary apocalypse, wisdom sayings, gospel narratives, theological history. Each has its own reading rules. Treat a poem as a propositional argument and you will misread it. Treat a parable as a chronicle and you will misread it. Treat a prophet’s symbolic action as a private domestic anecdote and you will lose the whole sermon he was preaching with his life.

This is the principle of this unit. Genre determines interpretation. Identify the kind of literature before you ask what it means, and the passage will open to you in its own way. Force every passage into the same reading template and you will distort more than you preach.

2. The Six Main Biblical Genres 2. Los seis principales géneros bíblicos

Six broad categories cover most of the Bible. Narrative: Genesis, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, Samuel, Kings, the Gospels, Acts. These tell stories; they show theology in action rather than stating it as doctrine. Law: the legal sections of Exodus through Deuteronomy. These give commandments and statutes for a covenant people in a particular moment of redemptive history. Wisdom: Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon. These reflect on how the world works under God’s rule. Poetry: the Psalms, Lamentations, and large portions of the prophets. These speak in compressed images, parallel lines, and emotion. Prophecy: Isaiah through Malachi, plus Revelation. These confront God’s people with covenant warnings and covenant promises, often with symbolic actions or visions. Epistles: Romans through Jude. These are pastoral letters written to particular churches with particular problems. Epístolas: Romanos a Judas.

Each has its own reading rules. The pastor who treats a Proverb as if it were an absolute promise will be wounded when his obedient parenting still produces a wayward son. The pastor who treats an apocalyptic vision as a newspaper headline will produce timelines that frighten his people and embarrass the Lord. Genre is the corrective.

3. Hosea — Prophecy as Enacted Biography 3. Oseas: la profecía como biografía representada

Some things seem unforgivable. The book of Hosea opens with one of them. God commands an eighth-century prophet to do something no modern reader can flatten into a domestic anecdote: Algunas cosas parecen imperdonables.

“Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry and children of harlotry, for the land has committed great harlotry by departing from the LORD.” (Oseas 1:2, RVG)

Hosea obeys. He marries Gomer, a prostitute. They have three children. The first is named Jezreel, meaning God will scatter. The second is Lo-Ruhamah, meaning not pitied. The third is Lo-Ammi, meaning not My people. Gomer leaves Hosea and returns to her old life. She eventually sells herself into slavery. And then comes the second command in chapter three: Go again and love this woman. Hosea walks to the slave market. Slaves were sold naked on the auction block. Hosea’s own wife stands naked before a courtyard of rowdy men. Hosea enters the bidding. He buys her back for fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley — half the normal price for a slave. Sin had taken its toll on what she fetched at auction. He pays the price, takes her home, and loves her again. Oseas obedece. Se casa con Gomer, una prostituta. Tienen tres hijos.

Ask the genre question. If Hosea is autobiography, this is a heartbreaking story about one ancient pastor’s difficult marriage. The reader may pity Hosea, admire his patience, and move on. But Hosea is not autobiography. Hosea is prophecy, and biblical prophecy regularly uses symbolic actions to deliver covenant messages. Isaiah walked barefoot for three years as a sign against Egypt. Jeremiah wore a wooden yoke around his neck. Ezekiel lay on his side for over a year. Hosea’s entire marriage is a prophetic sign. The marriage is the sermon.

4. What Hosea’s Genre Unlocks 4. Lo que el género de Oseas desbloquea

Once you recognize the genre, every painful detail becomes theology. Gomer is Israel. Hosea is God. Israel has played the harlot, chasing after Baal and other gods. The children’s names announce judgment: God will scatter, no longer pitied, not My people. Israel’s descent into spiritual slavery is Gomer’s descent into literal slavery. The price Hosea pays at the auction is the price God pays to redeem an unfaithful people. The hardest line in the book is God’s second command: Go again, and love this woman. No human heart would do that. No human husband should be required to. But the genre tells us why God required it. He was preaching His own covenant love through Hosea’s broken life. God Himself was modeling what He was about to do for Israel.

Read Hosea without the prophetic genre and you will end up debating whether God ethically commanded a man to marry a known prostitute. Read it with the genre and you stop debating and start trembling. God is the One who buys back what shame has unmade. That is the gospel of Hosea, and it is preached in a marriage rather than in a sermon.

5. Ruth — Narrative as Theological Story 5. Rut: la narrativa como historia teológica

Open the book of Ruth and you are in a different genre entirely. No symbolic action. No vision. No covenant lawsuit. Just a story. A famine drives a Bethlehem family to Moab. The father dies. The two sons marry Moabite women and die. Three widows are left. One returns to her people. The other — Ruth — clings to her mother-in-law and follows her back to Bethlehem, where she gleans in the field of a wealthy kinsman named Boaz. He notices her. He marries her. They have a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David. Four chapters. One love story. A whole theology of redemption.

Narrative is a real genre with real rules. One rule is that the narrator usually does not announce the theology aloud — he embeds it in the names, the details, the structure. Look at the names. Elimelech means my God is King. Naomi means pleasure. Mahlon means sick. Chilion means pining away. Pleasure’s sons are sick and pining away; that is no accident. Ruth means beauty. When Naomi returns to Bethlehem she asks to be renamed Mara, meaning bitter: do not call me Pleasure; call me Bitter, because the Almighty has dealt bitterly with me. The narrator is preaching, but he preaches through the names, not above them.

A second rule is that structure carries weight. Ruth begins with three deaths in Moab and ends with a birth in Bethlehem. The famine of chapter one is gone by chapter four. The bitterness of the opening becomes the blessing of the close. Naomi has a son, the women of Bethlehem say at the end — about a grandson in the line of the Messiah. Genre teaches you to read the story as the story it is, and to let the redemption it embodies emerge from the shape of the four chapters rather than from one proof-verse in the middle.

6. The Same Truth in Two Genres 6. La misma verdad en dos géneros

Now hold Hosea and Ruth side by side. Then add a third book — Luke 15, the Prodigal Son. Notice what the Spirit has done. The same gospel of unforgivable forgiveness is preached in three different genres. In Hosea, it is preached as prophetic enacted biography — the prophet’s real marriage is the visible sermon. In Ruth, it is preached as theological narrative — one family’s loss and restoration ends in the line of David. In Luke 15, it is preached as parable — a story Jesus tells to grumbling Pharisees. Same gospel. Three genres. Each genre lands the truth a different way. Ahora sostenga a Oseas y a Rut lado a lado. Note lo que el Espíritu ha hecho.

The Prodigal Son and Gomer are sometimes set against each other. There is one important difference. The Prodigal son came to himself and repented. Gomer never says she is sorry — the text simply tells us that her husband bought her back and loved her again. In one genre, redemption is preached through the sinner’s return. In another, redemption is preached through the husband’s pursuit. Both are true. Both are necessary. Each genre tells the truth that its form was built to tell. Try to flatten the genres into one and you lose the texture by which the Bible preaches God’s love from every angle.

7. Poetry, Wisdom, and the Trap of Flattening 7.

Hebrew poetry has its own grammar. Lines come in parallel pairs — the second line restates, intensifies, or contrasts the first. Imagery is compressed. Emotion is given room to speak. Why have You forsaken me? in Psalm 22 is a poet’s cry, not a doctrinal statement about divine abandonment. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want in Psalm 23 is a metaphor; David is not literally a sheep. Read the Psalms as flat doctrinal propositions and you will preach abstractions where the Psalmist meant to wring tears. Read them as poetry — with image and feeling and form intact — and they will teach your people to pray.

Wisdom literature has its own rules too. Proverbs are observations of how the world usually works under God’s rule. They are not absolute promises. Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it describes a general pattern. It is not a guarantee that obedient parents will never raise prodigals. The genre of Proverbs requires the pastor to teach the proverb and also to make room for the exception — or his people will be crushed when life proves the proverb’s limits. Ecclesiastes warns this is so: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; time and chance happen to them all.

8. Three Rules of Thumb 8. Tres reglas prácticas

Read a passage in its book. A verse pulled out of Hosea will not behave like a verse pulled out of Romans, even if both are in your concordance under the same word. Hosea is prophecy. Romans is epistle. Their rules differ. The book is the first signal of the genre.

Identify the genre before you ask the meaning. Stop, name the kind of literature, then read. Is this a song? A parable? A chronicle? A personal letter? A prophetic oracle? An apocalyptic vision? The answer will set the rules. Most interpretive errors trace back to a pastor who skipped this step.

Let the genre’s rules govern your sermon. A narrative sermon shows. A poetic sermon evokes. A wisdom sermon observes patterns and respects exceptions. A prophetic sermon confronts. An epistolary sermon argues from doctrine to application. A pastor whose every sermon sounds the same probably is not honoring genre. The Bible itself does not sound the same from book to book. It sounds like the genre God chose for that book.

9. What Genre Awareness Saves You From 9.

Three errors plague the pastor who flattens every text into the same shape. Treating poetry as propositional doctrine. The Psalmist cries; the pastor systematizes; the congregation goes home with a footnote instead of a song. Treating narrative as moral fable. The story of Ruth is reduced to be loyal like Ruth; the story of David and Goliath is reduced to face your giants; the gospel falls out of the story while the moralism stays. Treating prophecy as private prediction. Apocalyptic visions become end-times timelines; symbolic actions become merely strange anecdotes; the covenant warnings they actually carried get lost under speculation.

Each of these failures starts with the same omission. The pastor skipped the genre question. He hurried to ask what does it mean? before he asked what kind of thing is it? Slow down. Read the book first. Name the genre. Then ask the meaning. The text will yield more, not less.

10. Read the Library Like a Library 10. Lea la biblioteca como una biblioteca

A pastor who walks into a public library and tries to read a poetry collection the way he reads a phone directory will fail at both. A pastor who walks into the Bible and tries to read Hosea the way he reads Romans, or Ruth the way he reads Psalms, will fail in the same way. The Bible is a library. The God who breathed it out chose many genres on purpose. Each is a different way of getting the truth into the human heart. Each requires the reader to slow down at the threshold of the book and ask, what kind of room am I walking into?

Pastor, your people need a pastor who reads the library like a library. They need Hosea preached as prophecy, Ruth preached as narrative, the Psalms preached as poetry, Proverbs preached as wisdom, Romans preached as the urgent pastoral letter that it is. The God who chose those genres will reward your respect for them by speaking through each one in its own voice. The same gospel of unforgivable forgiveness that Hosea preached in a marriage, Ruth preached in a love story, and Jesus preached in a parable, will preach through your sermons too — if you let each genre say it in its own way.
